Notre Dame to be rebuilt exactly as it was, rules French Senate

30 May 2019

The Senate approved the French government's restoration bill on Monday evening, but added a clause which stipulates that the cathedral must be recreated exactly as it was before the blaze on 15 April.

This flies in the face of the French government's design competition, which was launched in the wake of the fire in order to generate ideas around the cathedral's restoration.

Because of the new clause, the bill cannot now pass directly in to law until the Senate and the Assemblée nationale have come to an agreement on a version of the bill that will become law.

The restoration is due to be completed in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
