Z33 debates – discourse and critique

24 April 2014

During the Salone del Mobile, Disegno's editor-in-chief and founder Johanna Agerman Ross was invited to join a panel discussion. Hosted by Jan Boelen, the founder and director the Z33 art and design museum in Hassalt, Belgium, the event was an exploration of the value of journalism and critique in design.

Organised in collaboration with DAMn° magazine, the talk was part of a series of discussions that Z33 staged during the Salone del Mobile, all of which sought to investigate the changing value of design and how design may play a role in shaping the future.

Boelen and Agerman Ross were joined by design critic Tamar Shafrir for a public discussion hosted at Milan's Palazzo Clerici. Over the course of an hour, the panellists discussed themes such as the value of design journalism; the complexities of what is and is not covered by design journalists; and the conflicts raised by working with advertisers, while retaining editorial integrity.

The prevailing topic of the day however was the value of critique and discourse to a design festival such as the Salone del Mobile. How can design discourse shape the industry and what is the best way for it to engage with its audience?

Disegno is proud to share a film shot by Z33 that documents this discussion. The film is available at the top of the page.
