IN BRIEF

Clerkenwell Design Week postponed to 2021

London

21 May 2020

The annual Clerkenwell Design Week was due to take place in London this week, but was moved to July in light of the Covid-19 lockdown. Now, however, the fair has been postponed to 2021.

"After careful consideration and working tirelessly to explore all possible options, we have decided to postpone Clerkenwell Design Week," reads a statement on the Clerkenwell Design Week site. The 2020 edition of the fair has now been cancelled, with the next edition due to go ahead 25–27 May 2021. "Postponing to next year means that we can secure CDW’s future," the statement continues.

Clerkenwell Design Week is the latest in a long line of design events to be cancelled this year as a result of Covid-19. The London Design Biennale andBiennale Interieur in Kortrijk announced their postponements earlier this week.

The sheer number of postponed events will have a considerable effect on the design industry, which relies on these occasions to present new releases and promote them to press and buyers. Many design brands have delayed new launches altogether, while an increasing number of brands are investing in digital strategies to reach their audiences during lock-down. How effective this is remains to be seen.
